32-bit µC evaluation board with FPGA

Published 2012-03-19

Silica (Germany) has introduced the Xynergy module combing a Cortex-M3 based STM32F217 micro-controller by ST-Microelectronics with a Spartan-6 FPGA (XC6SLX16) by Xilinx.

THERE ARE DEVELOPMENT TOOLS for either Cortex-M3 micro-controllers or FPGA kits, but the launched module merges both kind of chips on one board. This helps to overcome the problem that performing tasks not always can bet be integrated into the FPGA in a cost-effective way. High costs for the adequate IP cores and for the additionally needed resources in the FPGA very often require an implementation in favor of a two-chip solution. Particularly the use of standard communication interfaces like CAN, but also Ethernet and USB are in some cases cheaper and easier to implement on a micro-controller. Silica is distributor for both semiconductor manufacturers.
