Fleet automation system with J1939 interface

TouchStar has chosen the Treq-VMx mobile data terminal by Beijer Electronics (Sweden) as a component of its in-cab, Flex fleet automation system. The Flex is a fixed-mount system that provides electronic ticketing, invoicing and signature capture.

DRIVERS COMMUNICATE WITH ACCOUNTING, planning and dispatch systems using the portable mobile data terminal. Other key solutions the system offers include workforce and fleet scheduling, paperless e-commerce, route logistics and navigation, driver eLog and compliance administration, telematics and behavior management, and advanced back-office data integration. The system is available in multiple configurations, typically including a 4-inch thermal printer, mounting hardware and mobility software. The portability of the data terminal allows drivers to remove it from its mounting and take it outside the truck to capture signatures at the time of delivery. Drivers also have the capability to take pictures for data logging with a built-in camera.

The CAN interface in the Treq-VMx supports SAE J1939 communications. The company designed a module in-house with the single purpose of processing packets to and from the vehicle network. The module is called the Qbridge and it allows the data terminal to receive messages from any vehicle or controller transmitting J1939 messages. End-user applications communicate with the module using a custom protocol to send and receive data over the vehicle network. Software drivers are also included to allow easy access to the network through the module using the standard RP1210A API.

Besides the CAN-based J1939 interface, the Treq-VMx includes a 3G UMTS/HSPA+ or CDMA/EV-DO modem, and an integrated GPS receiver. Additionally, the device features a bright, LED lighted, WVGA display resolution (800 x 480 pixel), 10/100 Base-T wired Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wifi, one EIA-232/422/485 port; one EIA-232 port, five USB 2.0 ports, and a one hour active life lithium-polymer battery. It also has an extended operating temperature range of -20 °C to 60 °C and a storage temperature of -40 °C to 75 °C. As operating systems Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 Core or Professional are offered. "Our customers were asking for a rugged in-cab terminal that was also portable and easily transferable between vehicles," said Dave Fredricks, Sales Manager at TouchStar. "We chose the Treq-VMx for our Flex system because it not only features a large, 7-inch color, touch-screen display and WiFi capabilities, it also is highly portable while still demonstrating extreme durability."
