The CAN in Automation association (CiA) organizes a CAN FD Tech Day in Shanghai (China) on September 9, 2014. The conference will give engineers information on recent developments of CAN FD.
PARTICIPATING COMPANIES INCLUDE Etas, Bosch, Spansion, Kvaser, NXP, Freescale, and Vector. Presentations will be held on various topics, for example an introductory talk will deal with “The CAN network – From its early days to CAN FD”. Other topics include “Physical layer diagnostics with CAN FD” and “CAN FD – Automotive and industrial use cases”. Part of the conference will also be a tabletop exhibition with CAN FD products of several CiA members.
CAN FD overcomes two CAN protocol limitations: The data-rate limit of 1 Mbit/s and the 8-byte limit of the data-field length. Using the CANopen application layer on a CAN FD network allows faster transmissions as well as longer Process Data Objects (PDO) and Emergency messages (EMCY). Using longer data-fields also increases the throughput for software downloads. CAN FD has already been submitted for international standardization and CiA will set-up interoperability test systems for CAN FD soon.
