SPS IPC Drives 2018

PLC/HMI also for retrofit purposes

At the SPS IPC Drives 2018 tradeshow, Turck presents the TX700 series, which is optionally available with CANopen connectivity. The company also exhibits its CANopen/IoT gateway.

Recently, Turck announced that the company expects a 10-percent increase in turnover. Christian Wolf, the company’s managing director said at the annual press conference that the consolidated group turnover for business year 2018 is expected to exceed the 660 million euro mark. In the reporting period the number of employees at all Turck sites has risen from 4500 to over 4800.

At SPS IPC Drives in Nuremberg (Germany), the company shows the predecessor of the TX500 programmable logic controller with human machine interface. Compared to this product, the new TX700 comes with multicore processors at an operating frequency of 800 MHz and uses a Linux platform. This makes it possible to implement more complex control tasks and visualizations. The TX700’s glass display features a capacitive touch function, which enables intuitive operation with the gesture control typically used with smartphones.

The product is available with different communication interfaces. The CANopen version is particularly useful for retrofits. An integrated OPC UA server allows the parallel transfer of monitoring data to higher-level systems. Due to the three separate Ethernet ports provided, users can physically separate communication to cloud or office IT networks from the machine controller. This guarantees PLC operation and enables switch functions to be implemented for creating line topologies. The TX700 devices are available in display sizes of 5 inch, 7 inch, 10 inch, 15 inch, and 21 inch.

Wireless cloud gateways

Turck introduces in Nuremberg also its IoT gateway. TheTCG20 series enable machines and plants as well as measuring points at remote locations to be integrated into automation networks. With its range of interfaces including CANopen, the gateway is specially tailored for the requirements of industrial automation. Three wireless variants are available: with UMTS, dual-band Wi-Fi as well as simultaneous UMTS and Wi-Fi. The range of networks and protocols includes a serial EIA-232/EIA-485 port, a CAN interface, and up to five Ethernet channels. Besides CANopen, the devices also support Modbus-TCP as well as Modbus-RTU as master and slave, OPC UA as a client and server as well as Codesys network variables.

The integrated web server enables the gateways to be configured online at any time using clearly designed graphical menus and also without any programming knowledge. An Edge-PLC Editor manages controller tasks and also the preprocessing of data for periodical or event-driven data transmission. Cellular phone costs in UMTS operation are thus kept within reasonable limits.

After Turck with its strategic partner Banner Engineering founded the first joint venture in 2017 in the Asean region, both companies have this year continued their commitment to internationalization – each with one sales company in Malaysia and in Thailand. “We are seeing tremendous potential for the direct introduction of Industry 4.0 and IoT applications, particularly in Asia,” said Christian Wolf. “We are already discussing with several customers in the region how we can best serve this demand with our Turck Cloud Solutions.”

Turck’s business in the Asia-Pacific region increased this year by about 20 percent. The Europe/Middle East region grows about 15 percent. “We were also pleased that the USA, our largest market, was able to keep up the impetus in growth from the previous year,” said Wolf.
