Janz Tec (Germany) has announced the release of the emPC-CXR, their own rugged embedded PC system, to be presented at the SPS IPC Drives exhibition (Nuremberg, Germany). Based on the GE Intelligent Platforms Rugged COM Express embedded processor modules, a system with a novel cooling concept and housing design that can fulfill high and extreme demands in terms of temperature, density, shock and vibration is being developed.
AT THIS TIME THE PC SYSTEM IS PLANNED to feature an Intel Core i7 (dual core with 1,7 GHz) as a processor and 4 GiB DDR3 and an Intel Panther Point PCH chipset as memory (details may still change). As interfaces the system offers, amongst others, two M12 5-pin connectors for CAN or serial ports, as well as an SJA 1000 CAN controller. The physical layer ISO 11898-2 is logic-isolated, and network termination is software switchable and features a 120-Ω resistor. The PC offers an ambient operating temperature range from -40 °C to 70 °C and it measures 270 mm x 200 mm x 80 mm, without the M connector overhang.
When all connectors are mounted, the PC has protection level IP67, which means it is waterproof. It also offers a real time clock with battery backup. In terms of shock resistance the device complies with IEC 60068-2-27, in terms of vibration with IEC 60068-2-64.
Codesys as the runtime environment will be preconfigured, resulting in a computing platform for industries such as navy, mining, military, aircraft, construction equipment and marine, in which mobile applications are in the foreground. The system is also for industries such as medical or onshore / offshore designs, in which stationary systems with high availability are required.
"The long -term cooperation with GE Intelligent Platforms combined with our expertise in the field of embedded computer systems resulted in a product design that we would like to offer to customers from the above mentioned Industries. We want to offer a robust and high-quality computing platform, " said Michael Rennerich Member of the Board of Janz Tec. "Not only the selection of the Rugged COM Express modules from GE Intelligent Platforms with its perfectly suitable properties but also our know-how and our capabilities to design and manufacture customized computers guarantee for the success of these systems," said Michael Rennerich. “GE’s rugged COM Express modules provide a cost-effective, high performance computing solution that reduces risk for the manufacturer and the end user,” said Tommy Swigart, Global Product Manager at GE Intelligent Platforms.
