Modular industrial PC with CANopen

At Embedded World, MEN (Germany) presented the MH70I industrial PC, which offers an open system platform based on CompactPCI boards and complete software support. It is configurable with a selection of standard hardware, software, and accessories and can be used in industrial applications, as well as in vehicles.

THE PC OFFERS A RANGE OF CONFIGURATION POSSIBILITIES, which are built to order: it combines functions tailored to industrial applications with 19-inch mechanics, scalable high-end computing and graphics performance, and reliable system management. The company's first 19-inch industrial PC owes its modularity to a combination of CompactPCI, CompactPCI Serial and PCI or PCI Express cards and offers a pre-installed software package with all drivers required for Windows Embedded Standard 7.

Possible functions of the PC include binary and analog process I/O or motion counters, as well as COMs and fieldbus functions such as CANopen, Devicenet, and Real-Time-Ethernet (Ethercat, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Sercos, Varan). The functionality of Hilscher’s industrial field bus boards is also available for this PC and enables it to work as a CANopen master and slave, as well as a Devicenet master and slave. The PC is tailored to industrial applications.
It therefore offers a size of a half 19-inch rack, thus making it possible to install two systems side-by-side in a standard 19-inch housing. It offers space for nine individually configurable slots and can be wall- or rack-mounted. The system can be cooled by natural convection or using an additional fan tray at the bottom of the system. Cooling is independent of the mounting position.

Two PSU slots ensure a redundant, safe power supply and support AC, DC or USP PSUs. Normal operation is guaranteed if at least one external voltage is present. Two slots are provided for both CompactPCI and CompactPCI Serial peripheral boards. Two additional slots, which can either be used for PCI or PCI Express cards, or for two CompactPCI Serial peripheral boards as well as the CompactPCI PlusIO system slot, complete the set-up of the modular system.

The PC is built around the F22P CompactPCI PlusIO SBC with Intel Core i7 or Celeron processor offering one VGA interface, two USB and two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces at the front of the CPU board, as well as up to 16 GiB DDR3 DRAM. For extending the Ethernet functionality, there is the possibility to implement up to eight additional standard RJ45 or fiber optics Ethernet interfaces in the Compact PCI Serial slots. PCI Express Mini cards for wireless functions such as WLAN and UMTS can also be provided.

Regarding the choice of the peripheral boards, there is a wide choice available. Within a pre-defined set of boards you can select analog or binary I/O via M-Modules, fieldbus functions, SATA hard disks or wireless functions, as well as Ethernet interface boards or Ethernet switches. A SATA RAID can be built using up to four CompactPCI Serial hard disk carrier boards. The two PCI or PCI Express slots can be equipped with half-length cards for further customized extension of the system.
