PLC with HMI for low-end applications

Schneider Electric promotes the Magelis SCU, which provides CANopen connectivity, especially for machines with limited complexity. The device integrates PLC functions and features a 3,5-inch or 5,7-inch TFT display.

ACCORDING TO THE FRENCH SUPPLIER, the combined PLC and HMI can save up to 30 % of the installation costs. Besides the CANopen interface, there are Ethernet, USB, and serial communication ports (EIA 232/485). The integrated PLC features PTO/PWM functionality and controls also the local I/O. There are six 24-VDC digital inputs, six digital relay outputs, two 13-bit analog inputs, two 16-bit analog outputs, two 16-bit temperature inputs as well as two pulse train source transistor outputs (50 kHz). The compact unit is suitable even for machines with limited space.

Typical application with CANopen-connected drives and motion controllers
The programming interface complies with IEC 61131-3 and supports the
So-Machine programming environment of Schneider Electric. This includes a set of templates (application programs), libraries (function blocks), and integrated software routines. The software runs under Windows.

The product is suitable for simple packaging and machine tool applications. The CANopen implementation provides NMT master functionality and is able to control one axis with 100-kHz counters and a 50-kHz PTO/PWM output. In process control applications the device can be used for pumps and HVAC. It provides analog I/O with tension/current signals and temperature inputs (e.g. PT100 and PT1000 probes). There are also pre-programmed function blocks for PID loops.
