Connecting drives to PLCs

Dunkermotoren (Germany) provides a CANopen-to-Profibus-DP gateway. It can link the company’s drives to Siemens’ S7-300 and S7-400 host controllers.

THE GATEWAY CAN BE CONFIGURED BY MEANS of the Simatic manager tool. On the Profibus interface it supports data-rates up to 12 Mbit/s. On the CANopen side it provides PDOs to communicate with the drive units and communicates with bit-rates up to 1 Mbit/s. The PDO parameterization on the CANopen interface is done via the Profibus-DP interface. There is no need of CANopen-connected PLC. Most of the customers use the gateway solution instead of a direct Profibus interface in the drives, because of cost reasons. One single gateway is less expensive.

On the Profibus side the gateway features slave functionality. It supports VO (cyclic data transfer) and V1 (acyclic data transfer). The product brand-labeled from Micontrol provides on the CANopen side NMT master functionality. It is freely programmable. This means it can be used also as stand-alone controller.
