The CAN-USB/3-FD module from ESD Electronics enables data transfer between Classical CAN or CAN FD network and USB 2.0. The company is part of the SPS 2021 exhibition.
The well-established CAN-to-USB module equipped with CAN FD is able to transmit data rates of up to 8 Mbit/s on the CAN FD side, said the manufacturer. The USB 2.0 interface in use is designed for 480 Mbit/s. The unit has a solid, aluminum housing (55 mm x 54 mm x 25 mm) with four status LEDs in the front. It is powered by the USB port and provides an electrically-isolated CAN FD interface according to ISO 11898-2. The core element is the ARM Cortex-M7 micro-controller, with the help of which CAN messages can be sent with time stamps in a resolution of 1 μs. In conjunction with analysis tools, the module supports the silent mode.
The module comes with free-of-charge drivers for Windows 7/8/10 and Linux. Most recently, the Windows 11 support was added. CANopen and J1939 protocol libraries are available for Classical CAN applications. For quick setup of CAN, CAN FD, and CANopen networks, the free-of-charge CAN tools (part of the ESD-CAN software development kit) are available. With the help of the data-logging function, the tools also enable diagnostics and help the user to record the data traffic for later analyses and to process the data as a CSV file. Furthermore, the device is compatible with application programs based on the ESD’s NTCAN API (application programming environment). The device, which will be shown on the SPS 2021 tradeshow, is suitable for control, service, and commissioning tasks in many applications.
