CAN micro-controller for HEV/EV motors

Renesas Electronics (Germany) has announced the V850E2/PJ4-E 32-bit micro-controller dedicated for hybrid and electrical vehicles. The Risc processor comes with a set of peripheral functions for motor control. The chip features an integrated CAN module supporting 11-bit and 29-bit IDs. HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) are advancing as countermeasures against global warming by cutting CO2 emissions by automobiles. Improvement in controlling function of a driving motor is a key technology for supporting the environmental performance of HEVs/EVs. The introduced MCU is equipped with A/D converter and three-phase PWM timer, in order to control the motor efficiently.

The on-chip resolver sensor interface corresponds to a wide range of resolver sensors, eliminating the need for an external resolver-digital (R/D) converter. An excitation signal generating function (TPBA) for resolver sensor is also equipped to offer optimum system configuration for driving motor control.
The micro-controller also includes a high-precision motor control timer (TSG2) that complies with control of various motors. The on-chip A/D converter with synchronized sample-and-hold (S/H) function enables precise measurement of data from each sensor. The 128-MHz CPU adopts a dual-core lockstep system, in which a comparator continually calculates and detects failures. This makes it possible to achieve a high failure detection rate in real-time. The 1-MiB ROM and the 80-KiB RAM capacities are sufficient for the motor control software. Besides CAN connectivity, the chip provides SCI and UART interfaces. The MCU operates in the temperature range from -40°C to +125°C. It also comprises a regulator circuit that enables single power-supply operation at 5 V with an external transistor.
