Hygienic design for the food industry

Lika Electronic (Italy) has introduced a range of industrial stainless steel encoders and rotary encoders: AM58K is an absolute encoder for food applications that supports CiA 301 and CiA 406; RD53 is a rotary actuator that integrates motor, encoder, and controller in a single package and has CiA 301 implemented.

AM58K IS A CANOPEN AND PROFIBUS ENCODER that offers versatility to accommodate diverse mechanical and electrical requirements. It affords standard 58-mm flange diameter housing and both hollow (Ø 14, 15 mm) and solid (Ø 6, 8, 9,52, 10, 12 mm) shafts for a variety of mounting solutions. The absolute encoder encompasses optical components and offers a resolution up to 25 bits multiturn (13 bits singleturn per 4096 rev.). It can be integrated into industrial networks as it supports CiA 301 and CiA 406 and Profibus-DP communication interfaces for enhanced programmability and comprehensive diagnostic information including: resolution, counting direction, preset, offset, limit switches.

The encoders are suitable to withstand the harsh requirements of the food and beverage industry as well as aggressive operating environments such as chemical and petrochemical industry, mobile equipment, marine installations, and pharmaceutical, medical, and surgical applications. Hygiene, safety and
security requirements are particularly stringent in the food and beverage industry.

A line of the company's incremental and absolute encoders is offered with AISI 410 stainless steel enclosures. They all feature stainless steel frames, flanges, and shafts with a specifically hygienic design and a smooth and paint-free finish. These characteristics ensure resistance to corrosion and antibacterial properties and avoid trapped contaminants. In addition they mount long-lasting bearings protected in a stainless steel housing for enhanced encapsulation. This results in IP65/IP67 protections class and durability under extreme conditions and temperatures (both high and low).

The connectors and cables are expressly intended to deal with chemical exposure and frequent aggressive cleaning; their materials specifically suit the demands of food processing applications. Furthermore all exposed materials are selected to be non-toxic and safe for contact with edible products.

Rotary actuator for quick change-over applications

RD53 is a rotary actuator designed for large-scale change-over installations. It integrates motor, encoder, and controller in a single package and has CiA 301, Profibus-DP, and Modbus RS485 implemented. It offers an alternative to handwheels, position indicators, and similar manual devices, especially in multi-axis systems and where small-batches, one-off items, just-in-time production, and acceleration of cycle times are necessary. The encoder encompasses a 31-W brushless motor, a 1:50 gearbox and a real 18-bit multiturn encoder. The optical encoder is mounted on the output axis, so it cannot be affected by possible backlash errors of mechanics. The nominal torque is 5 Nm, starting torque 12 Nm.

At the core of the actuator is a controller developed by the company. Two cascade control loop systems ensure motion control: the position loop cycle performes at
every 1 ms and the current loop cycle performes at every 200 µs.
Controls on overtemperature, overcurrent, undervoltage, and network communication failure increase the operational safety. An integrated electromagnetic power off brake (permanent magnet) is designed to activate as soon as the motor comes to a stop and safely protects from uncontrolled movements, especially in mobile stops and vertical mounting installations and axes. It is capable of a 20 Nm holding torque.

The hollow shaft with collar makes lets the unit be mounted, even in tight spaces. It can be used in a range of applications in many industrial sectors and is suitable to drive positioning and auxiliary axes such as in mould changers, mobile stops, tools changers, filling machines, suction cups motion units, spindle positioning devices, conveyors, packaging and woodworking machineries, among others.
