Controlling extrusion processes

Gefran (Italy) has launched the Extru+, which is a control system for laboratory extrusion and compounding. The system controls, displays, and manages the entire process.

THE SYSTEM PROVIDES a special energy management function, which helps with efficient temperature control in machine automation. The saving and energy management functions are linked to an operating strategy in temperature control zones at start and during hold. These functions integrate with diagnostics and the ability to remote control the system via a variety of services accessible on the Ethernet port.

System flexibility is assured by the communication protocol CANopen, which lets the user integrate products by other companies. In addition, users can partially or completely modify the application supplied with the system. Precise control, especially temperature control, is provided by the PLC that manages the control loops, motor synchronization, alarms, and melt pressure, storing all the alarms and data for quality control. Lastly, a 7-inch (wide screen) display makes the system more user-friendly.

The application software supplied with the system, based on a general programming language according to IEC61131-3, has been checked, tested, and documented. It covers usual extruder needs, and the graphics and PLC code can be customized if necessary.
