“More CAN FD networks will follow”

Peter Decker from Vector answered our questions about plans for CAN FD at Vector, CAN FD tools, and what the future holds for Classical CAN.

Q: Are your CAN FD interface products bundled with your software tools?

A: No. Our network interface products can be purchased separately. We offer a programming interface (XL Driver Library) that allows using the interfaces in customer specific applications. CAN FD is supported with the XL Driver Library 9.0.

Q: When will you provide CAN FD interfaces compliant with the reviewed CAN FD protocol providing the stuff-bit counter?

A: Vector will support CAN FD network interfaces with stuff-bit-counter in the first half of 2015. We will start with our USB based VN1600 family. All further CAN FD interfaces will follow subsequently.

Q: Which CAN FD tools do you have in the pipeline?

A: Vector already provides a comprehensive tool chain for CAN FD. At the moment we are concentrating on CAN FD as part of our Autosar solution Microsar.

Q: Do you believe that CAN FD will substitute the Classical CAN protocol?

A: Yes, many Classical CAN networks have reached their limits concerning bandwidth. These networks are likely first candidates for CAN FD. I’m sure that more CAN FD networks will follow. The functional extension of CAN FD networks is considered both straightforward and cost efficient.

Q: Will you provide CAN FD support for higher-layer protocols?

A: Vector already supports the updated ISO 15765-2 transport protocol in its tools for reprogramming. Also, XCP on CAN FD is provided with our products. Furthermore we are discussing CAN FD support for CANopen and J1939.
