Supporting the CAN FD protocol

Tektronix has introduced a CAN FD protocol trigger, decode, and search solution for its MDO3000 and MDO4000C series of mixed domain oscilloscopes.

Widely adopted in the automobile industry, the Classical CAN protocol defined in the ISO 11898-1 standard is limited to Mbit/s. CAN FD solves the bandwidth limitation problem by allowing faster bit-rates and increases payload size from 8 byte to 64 byte. With the faster speed and increased complexity come new test and measurement challenges. The Tektronix CAN FD solution gives engineers working with this protocol a debugging and validation tool to validate and troubleshoot designs with visibility into actual bus traffic.

The provided CAN FD (MDO3AUTO, DPO4AUTO, DPO4AUTOMAX) software supports ISO and non-ISO CAN FD. The user can trigger on SOF, CAN-IDs, etc. There is a search function for specific payload bit-pattern. Further features include table listing with time-stamps as well as the ability to store and to export data. The product supports serial data capturing up to 20 MiB. Three CAN FD networks can be decoded in parallel. Additional 16 digital channels can be monitored and displayed. The built-in generator captures and simulates sensor signals.

The MDO3000 and MDO4000C mixed domain oscilloscopes come with an integrated spectrum analyzer giving engineers insights into both time and frequency domains. Even in serial design applications, engineers often need to tackle a range of tasks from device and system level debug to power optimization and EMI pre-compliance testing. The MDO3000 is a 6-in-1 oscilloscope with integrated spectrum analyzer, arbitrary function generator, logic analyzer, protocol analyzer, and digital voltmeter/counter. The MDO4000C also offers 6-in-1 versatility and upgrade flexibility together with higher performance and additional triggering, search, and analysis tools. For serial applications such as CAN FD analysis, automated search functions combine with the wave inspector controls to help users find events of interest. Considering that with long record lengths a single acquisition can include thousands of screen waveforms, this function can be a time saver.
