Diagnostic tool for long-term monitoring

The CANobserver by Gemac (Germany) is a diagnosis device, which is used for physical and logical long-term monitoring of CAN systems. It has been designed as a stationary supplement to the CAN-Bus Tester 2.

THE DEVICE IS PERMANENTLY IMPLEMENTED into the network, continuously monitors the data transfer and records it automatically for a period of up to ten years. On the basis of the physical properties of the CAN network it recognizes system errors and reports them to the plant operator. The device supports CAN (ISO11898-2), CANopen, Devicenet (EN 50325-2), and J1939 with bit-rates according to the particular CAN type. Station overview happens automatically, also according to the CAN type. The network traffic load is permanently displayed. The CAN connection is made via a 9-pin SUB-D connector. The device features a protection level of IP20 and a temperature range during operation of 5 °C to 40 °C. It measures 50 mm x 125 mm x 124 mm.

A slowly deteriorating signal quality can be detected in good time to avoid system standstills. The device ensures status-oriented maintenance. VDI/VDE has recognized this necessity as well and their guideline 2184, published in 2007, explains how plant operators can guarantee reliable functioning and maintenance of their network systems. A possible field of application of the diagnosis device can be found in real-time monitoring of CAN-network plants with plant monitoring according to VDI/VDE 2184.
